WHS grad DiSpirito wins prestigious Truman Scholarship

WOONSOCKET – A Woonsocket High School graduate has received a nationally competitive scholarship to continue her studies in law and environmental work. Dominique DiSpirito, WHS Class of 2018, is one of 62 students across the country to be named a 2021 Truman Scholar. The junior at the University of Maine plans to use the scholarship to attend law school and pursue a career in environmental policy. “In a very real sense, I definitely think I’m still processing, but it’s a huge honor and it’s really humbling,” she said. “Because this is what I want to do with my life, so to be recognized nationally as someone who has the potential and they are going to make a difference, it’s a huge honor.”

Woonsocket, N Smithfield students head back to school full-time

3/31/2021 Prom, graduation plans in the works After a long year of distance learning, the end is finally in sight for students who spent part or all of the past year learning from home. The Woonsocket Education Department announced a plan last week to bring students back to class five days per week. With the exception of kindergarten and pre-K students, who are already back to school full-time, students have been on a combination of fully distanced and hybrid learning schedules all year. Next Monday, April 5, students in grade 6 at Woonsocket Middle School and grades 9 and 12 at Woonsocket High School will return to in-person learning five days per week. Next Tuesday, they’ll be joined by grades 1 and 2. Elementary school students will attend school four days a week through early May to allow students who chose to continue distance learning to come into the school for testing on Mondays.

2/17/2021 NRICA tries to keep the Mardi Gras spirit alive NRICA President Sharon Charette and Mardi Gras Co-Chairpersons Marlene Gagnon and Wally Rathbun meet at Chelo’s to plan this year’s pared down Mardi Gras festivities. WOONSOCKET – It will be a relatively quiet scene in Woonsocket this weekend as the COVID-19 pandemic puts the traditional Mardi Gras festivities on hold. But the Northern Rhode Island Council of the Arts, sponsor of the city’s long-time Mardi Gras celebration, wants people to know they’re still working behind the scenes and look forward to bringing back the event next year. To that end, they’ve partnered with St. Ann Arts and Cultural Center, which has hosted the event in recent years, to put together a smaller celebration at Chelo’s in Woonsocket this Sunday, Feb. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. While diners will have to follow the restaurant’s usual policies for dine-in or takeout, members of the NRICA will be on hand to create a Mardi Gras
