Fix vapour recovery system to improve air quality, says NGT-appointed panel
A joint committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to study air pollution in Kerala has recommended the installation of vapour recovery system at fuelling stations and retrofitting of diesel vehicles with particulate filters to improve air quality.
The report submitted before the Southern Bench of the tribunal pointed out that petrol refuelling stations were a major source of benzene emissions, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter 2.5 concentration. “Therefore, installation of vapour recovery system is an important step in improving air quality. This is to be implemented in coordination with the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization [PESO] shortly,” it said.

As fear of stringent action grips them after licenses of 90 units suspended With over 90 fireworks units facing suspension of license for violation of safety rules, over 700 units have closed down in and around Sivakasi, apparently, due to fear of action by officials.
However, a senior official said that there was a drastic increase in price of raw materials owing to spiralling fuel price. “Besides, the manufacturers were wary of the weather condition with high humidity which would trigger fire accidents,” he said.

Virudhunagar district unit of Centre of Indian Trade Union has appealed to the State and Centre to set right violations of safety norms found in fireworks units to safeguard the lives of workers rather than suspend their licences.
In a statement, unit secretary P.N. Deva and president M. Mahalakshmi have said that the special teams formed by the district administration have suspended the licences of 28 fireworks units after fatal accidents at two places that claimed 29 lives in February. Suspension of licences will lead to unemployment to workers and their livelihood will be affected.
