Simi Valley woman convicted of embezzling nearly $350,000

A Simi Valley woman was convicted Thursday of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from her former employer, according to the Ventura County District Attorney s Office. Tara Elaine Nykoluk, 45, of Simi Valley, was convicted by a jury on three counts of felony embezzlement and forgery. The jury also found the special allegation true that Nykoluk s crimes involved the theft of more than $100,000. According to authorities, Nykoluk worked as a part-time bookkeeper for T&M Plumbing between 2006 to 2015. The company owner fired Nykoluk in 2015 after discovering she was using the company s debit card to make personal purchases. Through an investigation, Nykoluk was found to have embezzled approximately $348,000 on more than 1,500 transactions over her eight years of employment. She used the funds to purchase vacations, meals from restaurants and other goods and services. At the time of his guilty pleas, Wood paid full restitution to the victim insurance carrier State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF) in the amount of $151,891. Wood, a contractor, admitted to misrepresenting his total payroll and number of employees between 2015 and 2017, to fraudulently obtain lower workers compensation insurance premiums, defrauding SCIF of $151,891.
