Schools Seeing Relief, Conflicts Since Arizona Lifted School Mask Mandate

J.O. Combs Unified School District The J.O. Combs Unified School is among school districts no longer requiring masks after a new executive order by Gov. Doug Ducey. But it s still continuing social distancing, increased sanitation and cohorting. Requiring masks in school was never what Pima Unified School District wanted to do.  But last year, Gov. Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Health Services issued orders requiring masks in school districts and charter schools. The rural district in a Republican community in southeastern Arizona had no other choice but to comply. It was a tremendous burden  for Pima Unified students and staff, said Superintendent Sean Rickert.

Fact check: Vail, Arizona, parents did not remove school mask mandate

The claim: Parents in Vail, Arizona, took over the school board and removed the mask mandate A group of parents protesting mask mandates recently swarmed a Vail Unified School District meeting in Arizona, sparking online claims of a school board takeover by the group.  The protest followed Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey s April 19 announcement rescinding the statewide order that directed K-12 schools to require masks. This gave districts the option to implement their own face-covering policies, which the Vail school board was planning to discuss before the meeting was canceled due to safety concerns. While the district has disputed claims that the parents replaced the school board, some users on social media claim the parents meeting had a legal effect.

When David Lee addressed the Sahuarita Unified School District Governing Board on Wednesday night, he ended by congratulating the parents who recently protested the mask mandate at Vail Unified School District. A small crowd cheered. Eleven parents submitted calls to the public and, for the most part, their message was the same: End the mask mandate. The debate came up at other districts in Pima County last week. On Tuesday, about 100 people showed up in Vail to protest the mask mandate. The VUSD board called sheriff’s deputies and canceled the meeting over safety concerns as some parents pushed their way inside.

Vail School District & Other Arizona Parents Battle Mask Mandates – SheKnows

In case people forgot, there is still a pandemic raging, and currently there are almost 54,000 reported cases of COVID-19 in the U.S., with nearly 700 people dying in this country on Tuesday. But the mask wars rage on too. The latest example: Parents rallying against a mask mandate at their children’s schools caused a Vail Unified School District (VUSD) school board meeting to be canceled out of safety concerns Tuesday night in Arizona. The school year in Vail (which includes parts of Tucson) ends in under four weeks. On April 19, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey enacted an executive order lifting the state’s order to require face masks in schools. His order says, “K-12 school districts and charter schools still maintain the right to institute and enforce policies to mitigate against COVID-19 spread, including the use of masks,” and several local school districts elected to maintain their mask mandate throughout the remainder of the school year.
