Israel to Lift Outdoor Mask Mandate on Sunday

The mask mandate will remain for public indoor spaces. “The masks are intended to protect us from the coronavirus,” Edelstein said. “After professionals decided this was no longer required in open spaces, I decided to enable taking them off.” Edelstein credited Israel’s successful vaccine rollout with the country’s significant decrease in infection. More than three-quarters of Israel’s adult population has been vaccinated in just over three months. Infection rates have plummeted, allowing Israel to reopen its economy in recent weeks.

Weizmann Researchers Put Their Fingers on Hunger Switch

Health, Science & Technology By Hamodia Staff YERUSHALAYIM - Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 4:11 pm | ג  אייר תשפ א Israeli researchers are claiming that they are on the way to developing drugs that can “turn off the hunger switch” in the human brain, The Times of Israel reported on Thursday. A receptor in the brain, melanocortin 4 (MC4), has already been identified as the so-called “hunger switch.” But now a research team at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot say that their work will make it possible to manipulate the receptor, or turn the switch off. “It’s a switch activated by a hormone that our body secretes, which can be turned on and off,” said Dr. Moran Shalev-Benami of Weizmann. “We’ve shown exactly what it looks like and outlined all of its molecular details.”

Photo Credit: Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay Being constantly hungry, no matter how much you eat – that’s the daily struggle of people with genetic defects in the brain’s appetite controls, and it often ends in severe obesity. In a study published in Science on April 15, researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science, together with colleagues from the Queen Mary University of London and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, have revealed the mechanism of action of the master switch for hunger in the brain: the melanocortin receptor 4, or MC4 receptor for short. They have also clarified how this switch is activated by setmelanotide (Imcivree), a drug recently approved for the treatment of severe obesity caused by certain genetic changes. These findings shed new light on the way hunger is regulated and may help develop improved anti-obesity medications.

Israeli Scientists Find Way to Switch Off Brain s Urge-to-Eat Signals

By Yakir Benzion, United With Israel An international team of researchers headed by Israeli scientists announced a breakthrough discovery this week. They say they have figured out how “the master switch for hunger in the brain” works and as a result may be able to produce medicines to turn it off, giving a long sought-after medical solution to obesity. The researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rechovot and Hebrew University of Jerusalem were joined for the project by scientists at Queen Mary University of London. In scientific terms, the team discovered how to handle mutations affecting the melanocortin receptor 4, or MC4 receptor for short, the brain’s internal switch that controls whether or not you feel hungry.
