The Society of Martha Washington and the City of Laredo have entered into a five-year sponsorship agreement that will allow the 501c4 to make use of Sames Auto Arena as a way to address the financial burden that resulted from the 2020 Colonial Ball.
In 2020, the SMW hosted their ball at the arena which SMW representative Veronica Castillon touted a 1,200-guest attendance with 600 out-of-city visitors including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman.

Spirit of Laredo and School Bell Award competitions to begin

The Laredo Chamber of Commerce Education Committee announced the launch of the third annual Spirit of Laredo student video competition and the educator annual School Bell Awards competition.
Both competition applications have a deadline in April. Students interested in the Spirit of Laredo competition will have until April 16 to submit their entry. Educator nominee applications for the School Bell Award will need to be submitted before April 12 at 5:30 p.m. to be eligible.

In the first of several planned collaborations between the Gateway Community Health Center and school systems across Laredo, LISD teachers lined up on Monday outside Shirley Field to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Scores of volunteers and nurses rallied at the field parking lot from both LISD and Gateway to file paperwork, administer the vaccine and monitor the patients for any sign of side effects. LISD executive director of communications Veronica Castillon said that 600 vaccine doses were provided by the health center for teachers who had not received their first dose.
