After being shut down for over a year, the upgraded Ethan Allen Express is poised to come back in 2022 with its services expanding to Burlington.
Vermont Amtrak services were forced to close in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Vermont Transportation Agency decided to use this time to finish improvements to the passenger rail â the Ethan Allen Express train â that travels between Rutland and New York City. The project is expected to be finished in the winter or spring of 2022.
There are also early talks to have a stop in Shelburne.
Service will expand to Burlington and have additional stops in Vergennes and Middlebury, said Christopher Parker, the Executive Director of the Vermont Rail Action Network and a Railroad Consultant. Union Station in Burlington has not been in use since 1953.

Share Updated: 7:56 PM EDT Apr 8, 2021 It s been more than a year since Amtrak services stopped in Vermont because of Covid-19, but Thursday the Vermont Agency of Transportation announced that services should resume starting July 19. Last March we suspended Amtrak service in and out of Vermont due to Covid, Dan Delabruere at the Vermont Agency of Transportation said.The services include The Vermonter, running from St. Albans through Massachusetts and Connecticut all the way to Washington D.C. There is also the Ethan Allen Express, connecting Rutland to Albany and ending in New York City. Both options will return to their normal
On the verge of its 50th anniversary, the outlook for Amtrak has brightened considerably. The passenger railroad has received federal support to restore daily service on a dozen long-distance routes, order new locomotives and passenger cars, and extend services on existing routes, members of the rail advocacy group Empire State Passengers Association (ESPA) were told at their annual meeting this past weekend. Because of the pandemic, the meeting was held virtually. Among the improvements: The Ethan Allen Express between New York City and Rutland via Albany will be extended to Middlebury and Burlington, Vt., in early 2022, according to Lucas Irvine, road foreman of engines for Amtrak’s Empire Corridor. Construction of a tunnel through downtown Middlebury and other track and platform work are expected to be completed during this year’s construction season, said Christopher Parker, executive director of the Vermont Rail Action Network.
