Guterres Picks Slovakia s Kubis as UN Special Envoy for Libya - Letter to Security Council Sat 16th January 2021 | 12:30 AM
UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2021) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a letter to the Security Council, seen by Sputnik, said he intends to nominate Jan Kubis, the Special Coordinator for Lebanon and former Minster of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia, to serve as his new Special Envoy for Libya. I would like to inform you of my intention to appoint Mr. Jan Kubis (Slovakia) as my Special Envoy on Libya and Head of UNSMIL, Guterres said in the letter dated January 13. He succeeds Ms. Stephanie T. Williams (United States), who has served as my Acting Special Representative since 16 March2020.

Sources in the UN Security Council announced that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is considering nominating the Slovak Jan Kubis (Kubiš) to succeed Ghassan Salame as UNSMIL head.
The news was reported by the Tripoli-based official state news agency, LANA.
Kubiš, born in 1952 in Slovakia, is UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon. He brings with him many years of experience in diplomacy, foreign security policy, and international economic relations, both internationally and in his own country.
