As America s allies issued strong condemnations of rioters who stormed the US Capitol building in Washington on Wednesday, the nation s geopolitical foes used last night s events to question the efficacy of democracy.
The violence erupted after US President Donald Trump spoke to protesters to repeat his false claim that he won the US election in November.
The scenes of armed rioters breaching and trashing the Capitol which interrupted Congress s count of electoral votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden s win disturbed top diplomats around the world. Democratic leaders reacted with concern online, describing the chaotic scenes as shocking and disgraceful.
