Brandon Lewis arrives in Dublin later during a period of uncertainty at Stormont and turmoil in a now leaderless DUP.
His meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney s expected to focus on how best to ease tensions in the north.
It follows recent rioting in loyalist communities linked to the Brexit protocol, which introduced a trade barrier down the Irish Sea.
The situation led to the resignation of Arlene Foster as First Minister and DUP leader, following a revolt in the party.

Northern Secretary Brandon Lewis is making his first visit to Dublin today for a meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney.
They will meet this afternoon for talks about a range of issues, including the ongoing political instability in Northern Ireland.
Mr Lewis will also meeting Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald.

Fine Gael councillor James Geoghegan has told party members he intends to seek a nomination to run as a candidate in the forthcoming Dublin Bay South byelection.
Mr Geoghegan joins Labour senator Ivana Bacik in the race for the seat vacated by former minister for housing Eoghan Murphy, who resigned from the Dáil this week.
