SPOKANE, Wash. What started as a regular day of errands, quickly turned into a life-changing morning for a Spokane man.
William McGunagle woke up Friday and went to the store with his wife. When they got home, they found out they were millionaires.
McGunagle recently entered the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. The Prize Patrol arrived at his house with balloons and a $1 million check in hand, but when they knocked, there was no answer.
A neighbor gave McGunagle a call and found he was at Costco. The Prize Patrol waited until he got home to tell him the big announcement and when he found out, McGunagle was a bit speechless.
The con began last month when the woman received numerous phone calls from a man who said his name was Dave Morin, police said. He told her that she had won the grand prize in a lottery, but had to pay taxes before she could claim it. She was told the prize included a Mercedes-Benz. Calls kept coming in during the next three weeks. The woman was told to buy Vanilla pre-paid gift cards (Vanilla is similar to a credit card) and to send cash by mail to addresses in B.C. and elsewhere in North America. The woman sent close to $16,000 in cash by mail and another $10,600 in Vanilla cards, RMCP said.

SALT LAKE CITY In this tough pandemic economy, a lot of Utahns have been looking for any extra cash. Well, if you bought a home with a loan backed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), and you sold or refinanced it, there is a good chance the government owes you money.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is holding onto hundreds of millions of dollars in loan refunds. The thing is, many homeowners may not be aware they have money owed them.
KSL Investigators walked up to the home of Angela Sloan with a comically large check Monday.
