Westfield Fire gets $8K in FEMA funds

MIDDLETOWN The Boston-based Federal Emergency Management Agency is giving out $1.49 million in direct assistance grants to 98 volunteer and combination fire departments nationwide through its FY2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant COVID-19 Supplemental program.
The program awarded $8,036 to Middletown’s Westfield Volunteer Fire District, according to a press release. Other companies include the Monroe and New Fairfield volunteer fire, Stamford and Winsted fire departments.
Authorized and funded through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, these monies are an $100 million supplemental funding opportunity to support the purchase of personal protective equipment, and related disinfectant supplies and equipment, to help the fire services prevent, prepare for and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, the news r
Christmas continued for an extra day last week for several youngsters in the Westfield community and their families as volunteers and members of the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department delivered toys and meals.
The delivery was the culmination of a month-long collaborative effort between the fire department, Westfield’s Family Dollar Store and the Westfield Baptist Church. Originally scheduled for Christmas Eve, deliveries were delayed until Saturday due to Thursday’s heavy rains.
According to firefighters, children in several neighborhoods were eagerly anticipating the flashing lights of fire trucks, signaling the arrival of gifts. Excited youngsters accompanied by family members crowded around to greet volunteers and to express their appreciation.
