Early vote approaches 2,700 on last day As early voting on a $13.585 million bond proposition wound into its final hours Tuesday, 2,683 Wichitans had cast ballots, according to school district officials. The bond was proposed to build and buy equipment for athletic and recreational facilities for the district s two new high schools slated for completion in fall 2024. The proposal brought brisk support and opposition after the school district decided to float it to voters in February. This is the second time the district has tried to pass a bond for sports and recreational facilities. Voters approved a $276.415 million issuance to built a pair of new high schools in November but turned thumbs down on the accessories.

CRYSTAL FALLS –Thomas G. Brooks Jr. passed away on March 10, 2021. He was born on April 30, 1920, in Crystal Falls, to the late Bessie and Thomas G. Brooks Sr. He moved to Stambaugh at the age of two with his parents and graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1938. Immediately after graduation he started two years of apprenticeship in the funeral business with Mr. Fransher at the Stambaugh Funeral Home. In 1940 he attended the Cincinnati College of Embalming in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated in 1941. Tom was married to the former Kathryn McLaughlin on July 25, 1943, in Miami. She preceded him in death on April 1, 1999, and they were married for 56 years. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Doris (James) Matthews and niece, Marion Matthews Chubb.

Michael has attended the American Bach Soloists Academy and the University of Michigan Early Keyboard Institute and performed in masterclasses for Richard Egarr, Joseph Gascho, Corey Jamason, Edward Parmentier, and Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra.

He was a graduate of Cattaraugus Central School, University of Buffalo, SUNY Albany, and Cornell School of Law. He served in U.S. Army Military Intelligence during the Vietnam era, was a member of the New York and American Bar Associations, the American Legion, the Otto Masons and the Wesley United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Judy (Allen); daughter Kristin Weinhoffer, Grapevine, TX; son Stephen Brooks, Batavia, NY; stepdaughter Darcy Beatty, High Point, NC; stepson Christopher Ashley, Silver Creek, NY; brothers Terrald (Joanne) Brooks and Kameron (Becky) Brooks; sisters Lynn (Rick) LeFeber, Avion Brooks, Randy (Bob) Kiehle and Sally Crocker; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

On Tuesday, a Minnapolis jury found former police office Derek Chauvin guilty of three charges, including two for the murder of Floyd. For activists, like Hobdy, who is president of the Greenville Branch of the NAACP, it was a moment that will not soon be forgotten. “When I watched it [the reading of the verdict] on the news, it just seemed to me that justice worked,” said Greenville NAACP Branch President Will Hobdy.
