Detroit to inoculate homebound residents in new COVID-19 vaccine push

Detroit to inoculate homebound residents in new COVID-19 vaccine push View Comments There is hope for Detroit s homebound residents who want to receive a COVID-19 vaccine thanks to a new push from the city to inoculate this population, with outreach starting Wednesday and continuing through the end of November and early December. The city health department is teaming up with area agencies for the vaccination program, with possibly 40,000 people in the community who may be homebound or in need of services, said Ron Taylor, president and CEO of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging. There are tens of thousands of people in this city, perhaps the most vulnerable members of our community, who can t get out of their house to go to one of our vaccination sites; be it a mobile health site that Wayne Health runs or the many opportunities to get vaccinated through the efforts of the city of Detroit, and we need to do everything we can to reach these folks, said Phillip Levy, chief innovati

Stigma, pay hamper recruiting effort at Wayne Co. Sheriff s Office View Comments Detroit  With 200 jobs to fill at the Wayne County Jail, recruiting candidates is a top priority for Sheriff Raphael Washington.  But a recent job fair, which drew only two applicants in three hours, indicates the uphill nature of the battle for his department. Early signs point to COVID-19 vaccine slowdown in Michigan

There are early signs that demand for COVID-19 vaccines in Michigan has started to level out and drop off. State data show that 664,349 COVID vaccine doses were administered across the state during the week of April 5, which is when Michigan opened up vaccine eligibility to everyone 16 years or older. The following week, it dropped to 607,517 doses. Credit Emma Winowiecki / Michigan Radio Metro Detroit is helping to drive that trend. The city of Detroit and surrounding regions Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties all saw drops in the number of vaccine doses administered between the first two full weeks of April. It’s still early to say whether this is a dip or a trend. But Bill Nowling, a spokesperson for Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, said the county’s health department which serves county residents outside the city of Detroit has been giving out fewer shots for several weeks now.
