by Violet Ikonomova Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has declined to bring charges against the police officers involved in the 2020 shooting death of Hakim Littleton, pointing to previously unreleased video footage that showed a gun remained in the young man s hand for the duration of the shootout. Littleton was killed after opening fire on officers as they arrested a friend of his in Detroit s Bagley neighborhood last July. Officers returned fire, hitting Littleton three times in the legs, an autopsy showed, but questions were raised about a final shot to his head while he was on the ground. According to Worthy, whose Public Integrity Unit reviewed the case, the response was warranted because Littleton continued to shoot at officers while he was down. He fired a final shot just two seconds before an officer shot him in the head and was still holding his gun in his hand after he stopped moving, she said, providing corresponding still images fr

A prosecutor said Wednesday she has decided not to charge Detroit officers in the fatal shooting of a Black man who was recorded by police body cameras as he shot at an officer.
The July 10 shooting of Hakim Littleton was in self-defense, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. He was shot after Detroit officers investigating a July 5 gang-related shooting that left three people dead and five wounded stopped an acquaintance of Littleton’s on the city’s west side.
“This is not a chargeable case,” Worthy said. “This is a self-defense case and defense of others case.”
The acquaintance didn’t resist while being taken into custody and police cameras showed Littleton, 20, initially appearing calm, even raising his hands before suddenly reaching into his pocket, pulling out a semi-automatic pistol, pointing and shooting it at an officer as they faced each other.

Kelly heard arguments from attorneys for the five Richard Baird, Jarrod Agen, Nancy Peeler, Darnell Earley and Gerald Ambrose and Flint water prosecutors in a nearly two-hour hearing Tuesday before taking the motion to reroute the cases back to Genesee District Court under advisement.

(WXYZ) â Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said no charges will be made in the Hakim Littleton case.
Worthy said the officers acted in lawful defense.
Police shot Littleton in July 2020 during the arrest of another man. Littleton died from his injuries.
Police were arresting a man named Mr. Sylvester on an active federal DEA warrant. Littleton was present during the arrest.
Littleton then drew a handgun from his left pocket, pointed it at officers, and fired a shot at one of the police officers at close range, narrowly missing him. Chief Craig said it was between 2-3 feet from the officer.
The officers in this case acted with lawful self-defense; there will be no charges, Worthy said.
Her decision comes almost exactly nine months after the officer-related death. Police returned fire on Littleton near San Juan and McNichols after Littleton pulled a gun out of his pocket, pointed it at the head of an officer and opened fire which was captured on video.
According to Police Chief James Craig, the incident happened while officers were going to arrest another individual with alleged ties to a block party shooting when they came upon Littleton, who pulled out a gun as he stood on a sidewalk.
