Others remembered him as a figure of strength in fighting on the frontlines of COVID-19.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is alleging delays with getting COVID vaccine shipments into Michigan. Speaking Friday, she asked why the Trump administration is dropping the ball.
“I still cannot get a straight answer out of the Trump administration about why Michigan, like many other states, is receiving a fraction of the vaccines that we were slated to receive,” Whitmer said. “There are millions of Pfizer vaccines, many right here in Portage, Michigan, that are waiting to be shipped, but the feds are slow walking the process of getting the addresses to Pfizer for some reason I cannot get an answer to.”
Those who knew him knew that whatever mistakes he may have made, they were the consequence of being someone who opted not to always play it safe, but to put themselves out there on the front lines, which most are not willing to do.
As we both climbed up the ranks, our careers seemed to mirror each other. The higher we rose up the ladder, the closer our friendship became, because we both had been through so many of the same experiences and could understand what the other might be going through at any particular time.
Whether it was dealing with leadership issues and learning how to be in charge, or learning how to deal with criticism in the press, or just being in the public eye and adjusting to what’s expected, each of us walked similar and parallel paths that formed a strong bond of friendship.
