Rotary hears presentation about PolioPlus program Richard Porter, Plainview Rotary Club Dec. 17, 2020 FacebookTwitterEmail Plainview Rotarians got together for their weekly meeting Tuesday via Zoom as a precaution as the holiday season approaches. The program for the day was presented by club member Charles Starnes, Plainview mayor and Wayland Baptist University professor. Starnes gave a presentation on Rotary’s PolioPlus program, developed to eradicate the disease. The international organization began its fight against polio in the Philippines in 1979 and PolioPlus was launched in 1985. The program is funded in part through donations from organization members and in 1989, The Plainview Rotary Club pledged $153,500 to the program. The club still makes weekly donations.

School Board approves agreements with WBU, ASU for Plainview Collegiate HS program Dec. 18, 2020 FacebookTwitterEmail The Plainview Independent School District School Board unanimously approved memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreements Thursday night paving the way to provide more college credit opportunities for Plainview High School students. The agreements approved with both Wayland Baptist University and Angelo State University will create the Plainview Collegiate High School (PCHS) program, which will allow students to start their college career track as 9th graders at no cost to their families. “Wayland and PISD leadership have worked together for more than 18 months to design this educational opportunity,” said WBU President Bobby Hall in a news release provided by the university. “I always find it meaningful when Wayland serves those who know us best, our neighbors and friends in Plainview.”

The board accepting applicants include: Zoning Board of Adjustment, Building Trades/Fire Code Board of Appeals, Parks Advisory Board, Planning & Zoning Commission and the Board of Health. Makayla Cruz was introduced as the December Student of the Month. Makayla is the daughter of Thomas and the late Erin Cruz. She is a senior at Plainview Christian Academy and enjoys participating in sports. She is a member of the National Honor Society, works in the nursery at Harvest Christian Fellowship, is on her church’s youth leadership team, participates with her school for the Adopt-a-Highway program, volunteers for the Faith in Sharing House and works part time in the office at Sears. Makayla plans to attend Wayland Baptist University, majoring in nursing, with a
