This is the closest anyone can get to feeling like sports icon Diego Maradona. A Porsche owned and driven by the “Golden Boy,” who famously coined the phrase “Hand of God” to describe his winning goal in the Argentina-England match of 1986, is about to hit the auction block. 8 photos
Diego Maradona is considered one of the most accomplished and legendary figures in football, if not in sports in general. He enjoyed god-like status even later in life, and his death in November 2020 prompted a 3-day official mourning period in home country Argentina. In addition to his countless accomplishments on the field, Maradona was famous for his party lifestyle, drug addiction, and his impressive collection of cars, jewelry and watches.

An immaculate Porsche 911 Carrera owned by late football star Diego Maradona is heading to auction, looking as though it was hardly driven despite approximately 75,000 miles (120,000 kms) on the speedometer. It’s especially notable because it’s part of a limited run of Carreras created by Porsche in the early ’90s.
In November of 1992, Maradona better known as El Diego took possession of the then-new Type 2 Carrera 2 WTL (Works Turbo Look), one of only 1,200 models that rolled out of the factory during a two-year production run. It’s available in what auction house Bonhams describes as “practically original” condition, including the original 250bhp 3.6-liter Carrera 2 engine, maxing out at about 124 mph (200 kmh). The Porsche also retains its classy silver paint job and slick black leather interior, as classy today as it was in ‘92.
Car fans who are also soccer fans are likely to have their ears perk up when they hear that the late Diego Maradona’s 1992 Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera 2 Convertible Works Turbo Look is rolling across the auction block in March.
This will be the first time the car is offered at an auction, which may have something to do with the soccer star’s recent passing. The 911 was delivered to Maradona upon moving to Seville after running afoul of the Italian soccer league drug testers. Once in Spain, though, he wasted no time living it up, renting a famous bullfighter’s villa and ordering the car.

Of the sporting greats of the late 20th century, only a handful have earned legendary status worldwide and adulation beyond the racetrack, the court or the pitch, with football icon Diego Maradona lining up in this team of legends.
Off-pitch the maestro of the beautiful game also appreciated beautiful and exotic motor cars. A 1992 Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera 2 Convertible Works Turbo Look (estimate €150,000 to €200,000 or roughly R2,666,794 to R3,555,726), delivered new to “El Diego” in November 1992 – during his last season of European football - will be offered at auction for the first time next month in Bonhams Les Grand Marques Du Monde à Paris Sale.
