Salaried employees saw a loss of 3.4 million jobs in April
April turned out to be worse than expected when it came to jobs as states resorted to strict lockdowns. The unemployment rate shot up from 6.5 per cent in March to 8 per cent in April, while the employment rate fell from 37.6 per cent in March to 36.8 per cent in April, data by private think tank CMIE said.

India s unemployment rate increased to 6.9 per cent in February 2021 from 6.53 per cent in the previous month, according to latest data released by private think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The data showed that unemployment rate in urban areas declined despite a rise in joblessness rate on a national level. The rural areas, however, saw surge in unemployment during the month under review. The urban unemployment rate dropped to 6.99 in February from 8.08 in January 2021, while rural unemployment rate rose to 6.86 per cent from 5.83 per cent in the previous month.

The year 2021 started on positive note for India as it recorded a significant fall in the unemployment rate and an equally impressive increase in employment rate in January, according to private think tank CMIE. Employment in India, however, remained lower than it was before the pre-COVID levels, but there were lesser unemployed people willing to work as well, it said.
