The Hays County Parks and Open Space Advisory Commission (POSAC) will host a virtual meeting on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to present and discuss a project-filled agenda.
POSAC was established by the Hays County Commissioners Court in February of 2020.
Initially, the purpose of the commission was to establish a process to study the possibility for a potential park, open space, and conservation bond program and to solicit recommendations to the Hays County Commissioners Court on the viability of including a potential bond package on the November 2020 ballot.
This would ultimately lead to Proposition A. According to the POSAC web page, Proposition A “called for the issuance of $75,000,000 in general bonds, along with other potential funding mechanisms, to establish parks, open spaces, conservation lands, and other recreational opportunities.”
The San Marcos City Council will meet Tuesday with a full agenda.
Among the over 45 items on the docket, the city council will discuss and consider the approval for the establishment of a Mexican American and Indigenous Heritage and Cultural District in San Marcos.
If approved, the Mexican American and Indigenous Heritage and Cultural District would be located in the area of Hopkins Street at City Park along the San Marcos River and east of Interstate 35 to Durango Street and Staples Road, south to Ellis Street and west to Purgatory Creek.
Council will also continue the conversation surrounding the preservation of the African American Home Economics School Building.
At its July 27 meeting, the Hays County Commissioners Court adopted a proclamation declaring August 2021 as National Immunization Awareness Month.
The council believes the presence of an immunization awareness month permits children, adolescents and adults the education and resources needed to safely receive available vaccinations. The council accepted the proclamation, and Eric Schneider, Hays County epidemiologist, provided more information to the commissioners on the county health department s promise to vaccinate children 12 years and older for free, even if they are uninsured.
âAnyone 12 years of age and up can do their part in helping slow down the spread of COVID-19 by becoming fully vaccinated,â Schneider says. âIn order to assist our community and getting every child fully vaccinated, the Hays County Local Health Department partnered with the Live Oak Health Partners Community Clinic to provide free vaccines to children uninsured or underinsured for the week

Tuesday’s Hays County Commissioners Court meeting saw much discussion around the proposed multi-year Improvement Grant Program application to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission (TIDC) for public defender services.
“The TIDC grant application that the county submitted requires judicial support to get funding from TIDC,” Commissioner Lon Shell said.
Shell spoke of the significance of implementing a mental health court into the Hays County justice system.
“During the development of the grant application that we submitted and supported, this court and many of our stakeholders agreed that mental health was a prime concern,” Shell said.
Shell explained that while this is just one issue to tackle, it can help make strides of improvement throughout the justice system.
