Frohman Summer Series: Hands on History has in-person, take-home options Kids can build ships and boats, learn creative construction and make their own roller coaster with take-home kits from the Frohman Summer Series: Hands-on History at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont. The three-part series, which promotes learning about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through local history, will take place in-person during three sessions throughout the summer. There also will be 10 take-home kits available per session for those who would rather complete the activities at home. The in-person program and take-home kits are free. Kids can attend or get take-home kits for one, two or all three sessions. For in-person sessions, kids can pick from one of two time slots offered during the June, July and August sessions. There are five spots available in each time slot.

Hayes Presidential seeks high school students articles, short essays

The Beacon Attention high school students! The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont is looking for articles and short essays, stories and poems inspired by presidential history, one or more U.S. presidents, the media or presidents’ relationships with the media. Submissions will be considered for publication in a special student section of the Statesman, Hayes Presidential’s quarterly newsletter. The section will run in the spring edition of The Statesman, which will be published in May. Entries must be emailed to Education Coordinator Joan Eardly by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 31. PDF format is preferred. These are the submission parameters: Submissions are open to high school students (grades 9-12) only; Submissions can be one of the following: Article, short essay, short story or poem; All writing must be the student’s original work unless cited (MLA, APA or Chicago style).

New maps available for researchers in Ohio

The Monroe News Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont, Ohio, has added a number of maps and navigational charts to its online catalogs. The items were in the archives of the Hayes Presidential Library, and include original, hand-drawn lithographs along with hand-painted maps on fabric. Others are copies of maps located in the National Archives. They have been in storage for decades. For more than a year, Hayes Presidential Librarian Pat Breno has been studying these maps, determining the years or time periods in which they were created and cataloging them online. She adds them to the online catalogs run by WorldCat and Bowling Green State University, which are available on Hayes Presidential’s website, and describes each one. From there, anyone across the world can search for them using keywords.
