Sheriff’s investigators on Thursday released the names of deputies who exchanged fire with a 23-year-old man accused of shooting his girlfriend Sunday on the Barona Indian Reservation.
The deputies were identified as Robert Simpson, a 22-year veteran of the department; Bryson Benavente, who has been on the force for eight years; Nicholas McGregor, who has been with the department for seven years; and Tony Bernal, who has been on the force for nearly two years.
Sgt. Michael Cruz, a 14-year veteran, also returned fire when the man shot at the deputies Sunday.
The deputies had gone to a home on the reservation to investigate a domestic violence incident. According to scanner traffic and Lt. Thomas Seiver, they were talking to the woman when the man stepped onto the balcony of the house on Capitan Grande Road, east of Wildcat Canyon Road, and started shooting about 8 p.m.

A woman was shot and injured Sunday evening when sheriff’s deputies exchanged gunfire with her 23-year-old boyfriend on the Barona Indian Reservation.
Deputies had gone to the reservation near Lakeside to talk with the woman about a domestic incident when the boyfriend started shooting around 8:20 p.m.
According to scanner traffic, the man came out of a building onto a balcony on Capitan Grande Road, east of Wildcat Canyon Road, and started shooting at the deputies, who immediately sought cover behind vehicles.
One sergeant and four deputies returned fire.

The woman was shot during the exchange of gunfire although it was unclear who shot her. She was treated at a local hospital for a non-life-threatening injury and was discharged. No deputies were injured.
