SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Authorities Thursday publicly identified five lawmen who came under fire last weekend while investigating a report of domestic violence at the Barona Indian Reservation, prompting a shootout that left a woman wounded. San Diego County sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Cruz and Deputies Bryson Benavente, Tony Bernal, Nicholas McGregor and Robert Simpson returned fire when 23-year-old ex-con Gianni Oliver emerged from a home in the 4000 block of Capitan Grande and allegedly began shooting at them on Sunday evening, department officials said. Oliver’s girlfriend, also 23, was speaking with the deputies when the shootout erupted and was wounded by the suspect’s gunfire, Lt. Thomas Seiver said. She was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged.

Officials ID deputies who exchanged gunfire with man they say shot girlfriend on Barona reservation

EAST COUNTY    Sheriff’s investigators on Thursday released the names of deputies who exchanged fire with a 23-year-old man accused of shooting his girlfriend Sunday on the Barona Indian Reservation. The deputies were identified as Robert Simpson, a 22-year veteran of the department; Bryson Benavente, who has been on the force for eight years; Nicholas McGregor, who has been with the department for seven years; and Tony Bernal, who has been on the force for nearly two years. Sgt. Michael Cruz, a 14-year veteran, also returned fire when the man shot at the deputies Sunday. The deputies had gone to a home on the reservation to investigate a domestic violence incident. According to scanner traffic and Lt. Thomas Seiver, they were talking to the woman when the man stepped onto the balcony of the house on Capitan Grande Road, east of Wildcat Canyon Road, and started shooting about 8 p.m.

Officials said: “When deputies arrived, they were speaking with the woman when her boyfriend, [23-year-old] Gianni Oliver, emerged and started shooting at the deputies. The confrontation resulted in one sergeant and four deputies shooting at Oliver. After a short standoff, Oliver surrendered to deputies assigned to the Special Enforcement Detail.”

Domestic incident erupts in gunfight with San Diego deputies

SAN DIEGO    A domestic incident investigation by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies on the Barona Indian Reservation erupted into a gunbattle that left a woman wounded, authorities said Monday. Deputies responded to a location on the reservation Sunday night and were speaking with the woman when her boyfriend emerged and started shooting, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. A sergeant and four deputies fired back and after a short standoff Gianni Oliver, 23, surrendered and was arrested, the department said. Oliver was not shot but was treated at a hospital for a minor injury. The woman was treated for her wound and was released from a hospital. Detectives were investigating how she was shot.
