SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Authorities Thursday publicly identified five lawmen who came under fire last weekend while investigating a report of domestic violence at the Barona Indian Reservation, prompting a shootout that left a woman wounded.
San Diego County sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Cruz and Deputies Bryson Benavente, Tony Bernal, Nicholas McGregor and Robert Simpson returned fire when 23-year-old ex-con Gianni Oliver emerged from a home in the 4000 block of Capitan Grande and allegedly began shooting at them on Sunday evening, department officials said.
Oliver’s girlfriend, also 23, was speaking with the deputies when the shootout erupted and was wounded by the suspect’s gunfire, Lt. Thomas Seiver said. She was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged.

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) A man was taken into custody and a woman was hurt in a deputy-involved shooting that took place after deputies responded to a domestic incident on the Barona Indian Reservation.
San Diego County Sheriffâs Department officials said deputies were called to the 4000 block of Capitan Grande, just north of Lakeside, regarding an incident involving a man and woman at around 8:20 p.m. Sunday.
Officials said: âWhen deputies arrived, they were speaking with the woman when her boyfriend, [23-year-old] Gianni Oliver, emerged and started shooting at the deputies. The confrontation resulted in one sergeant and four deputies shooting at Oliver. After a short standoff, Oliver surrendered to deputies assigned to the Special Enforcement Detail.â
At one point during the shoot-out, the woman, who was not identified, was struck by gunfire. It was unclear who fired the bullet that struck the woman.
Deputies with SDSO s tactical team and the suspect faced off in a short standoff. Eventually, Oliver surrendered, and was taken to a hospital for treatment of a minor, non-gunfire related injury, authorities said.
The woman was taken to a local hospital to be treated for the gunshot wound, which was not considered to be life-threatening. She was discharged sometime before 7:30 a.m. Monday.
Oliver was arrested on five counts of attempted murder and one count of felon in possession of a firearm. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail. He is expected in court of Feb. 19.
