When the recent Edison graduate was too young to play, he went to his older brother Jake Converse’s Catholic Youth Organization games and didn’t act like his peers. His attention was directed at the playing field. “Luke would sit and watch,” said Lerma, who is the girls’ athletic coordinator at Whittier Middle School. “He wasn’t playing around the playground, like the other kids. So, when he started playing, he didn’t have to learn too much.”

South Dakota student wins national Poetry Out Loud competition

I m still in shock; it hasn t really hit me yet, Megosha told the Argus Leader on Friday morning. I wasn t expecting to win $20,000. Megosha was the best of nine student finalists from across the nation. She is also the first student poet from South Dakota to ever win the competition. This has been such a crazy opportunity, she said. I didn t expect any of this to happen. I had a week to prepare for (the preliminary competition), and everything has been such a journey ever since.
