761 kg of ganja seized from truck, 3 youngsters arrested
The Excise Department has laid its hands on one of the biggest drug rackets in the State when it seized 761 kg ganja from a truck at Walayar near here on Wednesday night.
Although the initial estimation of the contraband was 1,000 kg, excise officials clarified here on Thursday that the seized ganja weighed 761 kg. “Still this is the biggest seizure from a vehicle in the State. We have made several seizures from godowns and other places, but not so much from a vehicle,” said Excise Deputy Commissioner Shaji S. Rajan.

In one of the biggest drug hauls ever made in the country, an excise special squad seized 1,000 kg of ganja from a truck at Walayar near here on Wednesday night. It is roughly valued at ₹100 crore.
The excise team led by Deputy Commissioner Shaji S. Rajan seized the truck and arrested three youngsters. The ganja, reportedly brought from Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, was being carried to Kochi for wholesale distribution. Excise officers said that it was the biggest seizure ever in the State. It could be the biggest in the country too, they said.
The ganja was found hidden in a secret compartment in the truck. The excise team acted on a tip-off.

PALAKKAD Excise officers seized 125 kg of ganja worth ₹2 crore from a pickup van at Walayar, near here, on Thursday. The ganja was brought from Visakhapatnam for distribution in Kochi. Four persons were arrested.
Two special squads of the excise worked in tandem to seize the smuggled in ganja on the basis of a tip-off received by Deputy Excise Commissioner Shaji S. Rajan. A car that escorted the pickup was also seized by the excise team.
Those arrested were Vijesh, 31, from Thiruvegappura; Shinoj, 33, from Kannamangalam, Payyanur; Sixson, 31, from Punithara, Kochi; and Rajesh, 42, from Tripunithura, Kochi.
Excise officials said the ganja had been bought from Padayilu, near Visakhapatnam. They said surveillance had been tightened in view of the elections and upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
