Was appointing a female priest Dia Mirza's befitting reply to sexist Bollywood and society? In conversation with Brut India, actress Dia Mirza revealed her thoughts on sexism in Bollywood. She had made her acting debut with 2001 film Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein which also starred actor R. Madhavan. Dia mentioned about how sexist stories have been prevailing in our industry and she has been part of those. She noticed how the crew mostly consisted of men and a handful of women. She also believes that a large part of this sexism is not even conscious as most male writers, directors and actors are unaware of their sexist thinking. As we all know, Dia and her husband Vaibhav Rekhi had made headlines this February as they appointed a female priest, Sheela Atta for their wedding. This was something new to our society. We hardly question the prevailing gender roles. When Dia and Vaibhav broke stereotypes and encouraged equality, many applauded them, while a few criticised them for disrespecting the traditions. It seems Dia has been very thoughtful about what she has experienced over the years in this industry as well as in our society. She definitely gave a befitting reply to all the sexism she witnessed here and has set an example for others to follow. What are your views on sexism in Bollywood?
