Counting of votes for 280 DDC seats in J&K begins
SRINAGAR: Counting of votes began on Tuesday to decide the fate of 2,178 candidates in the fray for the maiden District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said here.
The process will bring to an end the eight-phase polling process which was spread over 25 days. There are 280 DDC seats 14 in each of the 20 districts of the union territory.
The DDC election is being seen as a fight between the BJP and other political parties in the region.
The elections to this third tier of Panchayati Raj system were held for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir and were the first mass polls since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The People s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), an amalgam of seven political parties, is leading on 113 seats while the BJP is a distant second with leads on 69 seats. The Congress dismal performance continues in Jammu and Kashmir too, with the party leading on just 23 seats, as the counting of votes for elections to District Development Councils in Jammu and Kashmir was underway.

National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said people from Jammu as well as Kashmir have extended complete support to the Gupkar alliance and endorsed its plan seeking restoration of Jammu and Kashmir s special status by giving a befitting reply to the BJP in the DDC polls.
His remarks came amid the counting of votes of the District Development Council (DDC) elections, in which the People s Alliance on Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is leading in 81 seats and has won 30 so far whereas the BJP is leading in 56 and has won eight seats till now.

The counting of votes is underway for 280 constituencies in the Jammu and Kashmir’s District Development Council (DDC) elections.

The results will decide the fate of 4,181 candidates, including 450 women, who contested from 280 DDC seats in Jammu and Kashmir. Polling had happened across eight phases between November 28 and December 19. About 51 per cent of the 57 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise in the elections, which were largely peaceful. These were the first elections to the third tier of the Panchayati Raj system held in Jammu and Kashmir. These were also the first mass polls that happened after provisions of Article 370 were abrogated and Jammu and Kashmir was made a Union Territory in August 2019.
