As FEMA leaves Memphis, vaccine sites begin drawdown, canvassing ramps up

FEMA chose to host a site in Memphis not because the city was behind on vaccinations. Instead, officials said, the choice was based on how the area scores on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s social vulnerability index. The score calculates 15 weighted Census factors, including poverty, transportation access and housing, which are used to estimate vulnerability to disasters or disease.  Still, the continued low turnout at the Pipkin site, located near the Liberty Bowl and Fairgrounds, was cause for FEMA s departure. In late April, city officials acknowledged FEMA could decide to extend its stay after a planned May 17 drawdown date, but that the agency probably would leave if turnout stayed low.

We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.
