Hardware and software infrastructure vendor Broadcom is in talks to acquire privately held business analytics and data management software giant SAS Institute in a deal potentially valued at US$15 billion to US$20 billion, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
A deal could be reached in the next few weeks, according to the report, but is by no means assured.
An acquisition of SAS would the latest of several major acquisitions by Broadcom, a San Jose, Calif.-based semiconductor manufacturer that has moved in recent years to become a supplier of IT hardware and software infrastructure technology.
Broadcom acquired infrastructure software vendor CA Technologies in November 2018 for US$18.9 billion and bought cybersecurity software developer Symantec Enterprise in November 2019 for US$10.7 billion. Broadcom also bought network systems manufacturer Brocade Communications Systems in 2017 for US$5.5 billion.

Proofpoint has agreed to purchase data loss protection MSP InteliSecure to help customers protect critical data in diverse environments.
The email security vendor said its proposed US$62.5 million acquisition of Greenwood Village, Colo.-based InteliSecure will simplify data protection for customers by streamlining policy creation and providing unified event visibility across tools. InteliSecure also will deliver real-time reporting required by key stakeholders and reduce noise to increase focus on critical incidents.
“We’ve seen exceptional customer demand for information protection managed services as organizations are continuing to work in a cloud-first, remote-oriented world,” Proofpoint CEO Gary Steele said in a statement. “The acquisition of InteliSecure will support our ability to collectively help our customers and partners with people-centric managed security services.”
