Navy can train in state parks MOUNT VERNON (AP) The U.S. Navy has been granted permission to conduct special operations training at some Washington state parks, with mitigation requirements specific to each park, officials said. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission voted 4-3 on Thursday in favor of the training, The Skagit Valley Herald reported Thursday. The seven-member commission is set to review its decision after 90 days.  

Former Alaska state ferry raised from drink in western Washington

(AP) Crews have raised the first ferry of the Alaska Marine Highway System after the retired vessel sank in Guemes Channel at Anacortes in western Washington. The Skagit Valley Herald reports that the Chilkat was lifted by a crane and placed on a barge on Wednesday. The Chilkat sank on Jan. 12 after it broke free from its mooring at Lovric’s Sea-Craft and crashed into the Guemes Island Ferry Terminal. Officials say it had to be removed because it was near the terminal and posed a hazard. The ship was launched in 1957 and decommissioned in 1988. It was then re-purposed for other jobs before recently being taken out of service.

Vaccine appointments available for eligible Skagit County residents

Those 65 or older, or those 50 or older who live in a multi-generational household are eligible to receive the vaccine, along with those in Phase 1A. Individuals can schedule appointments with Skagit Regional Health’s Mount Vernon or Smokey Point clinics. The Mount Vernon Haggen Pharmacy is also scheduling appointments and Island Hospital has started booking appointments for established patients or those who live in the hospital district. The Skagit Valley Herald reports La Conner Drug is still vaccinating people in Phase 1A mainly health care workers, first responders and residents of long-term care facilities until it receives its next shipment.

Skagit coach receives national recognition

A longtime Skagit County wrestling referee has received national recognition. 70-year-old Randy Audette earned a spot in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum for his decades of coaching throughout Skagit Valley and neighboring areas. The Skagit Valley Herald reports Audette will be inducted in September as part of the class of 2021 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Audette was a star wrestler at Burlington High School and later wrestled for Skagit Valley College.
