Scott Leonard named Davidson County s Planning director

The Dispatch No matter where Scott Leonard is it s hard to get away from work. On his drive to work, during his drive to church and even on his drive to the grocery store, he sees work outside his Ford Mountaineer s windshield wherever he looks. It s not a problem, however, to be surrounded by views of his job as a 30-year employee with the Davidson County Planning and Zoning Department. That view provides a daily reminder of the imprint he has been able to have on his home county and why he has spent his entire career here. Leonard loves Davidson County, his co-workers and his job, a passion that helped propel him ahead of the other applicants for the director s position of the Davidson County Planning and Zoning Department. Leonard was named director on Feb. 1.

Proposed housing development will be largest in Davidson County s history

The Dispatch Four hundred thirty-six acres of land in the western part of Davidson County that was once home to hundreds of dairy cows for the Coble Dairy Farm is inching closer to becoming the largest housing development per density in the county s history. The proposal by Hubbard Realty of Winston-Salem and an unnamed prospective buyer to build 1,078 single-family and condo homes on three tracts of land along Tyro and Old Salisbury roads and Front Street is scheduled to come before the Davidson County Planning and Zoning Board at the end of February. In turn, the planning and zoning board will make a recommendation to the Davidson County Board of Commissioners to approve, deny or study the proposal more for possible modifications. The board of commissioners has the final say.

Salvation Army Vail makes holidays brighter with food donation

Special to the Daily) It has been a challenging time for all nonprofits this year. Due to COVID-19, Salvation Army Vail hasn’t been able to host its usual fundraisers except for the Red Kettle campaign, which typically happens between mid-November and Christmas. Even so, the Red Kettle campaign is only a small portion of the nonprofit’s annual budget and less people came out to ring the bell and less people were in the grocery stores this year. But, Salvation Army Vail had a brighter Christmas season than expected due to the support of some generous donors. “Since COVID-19 hit, Salvation Army Vail has been inundated with requests for help with food, rent, utilities, prescription assistance and more,” said Anne Barnett, who is the volunteer board chair for Salvation Army Vail. “Requests for food are up 40%. We normally give out about 400 boxes of food each month but it’s been closer to 600. That represents about 3,000 people a month, just for food assistance.”

Davidson County planning and zoning Director Guy Cornman to retire

Davidson County Planning and Zoning director will retire Jan. 1 The Dispatch For a man who loves history as much as Davidson County Planning and Zoning Director Guy Cornman, it s fascinating to listen to him spin tales of his family s history and see how it all circles back to him, Davidson County, community planning and a pandemic. He ll dot the last i  and cross the last t in his career s history on Dec. 31 when he retires from his position as the county s planning and zoning director and begins living the plans he has mapped out for retirement. The Fayetteville native rolled into Lexington at age 4 in 1959 when his father was hired as the plant manager at the former Edgewood Casuals, a shirt manufacturer. This wasn t the first time his family had walked the ground of Davidson County or had a hand in the planning of the county s future. That began with his maternal grandfather, Karl Sloan.
