Arlen Atkinson facing agg murder, other charges in home fire death

CARROLLTON  The suspect in last month s gasoline burning death is facing an eight-count indictment from the Carroll County grand jury as prosecutors revealed additional details of the Jan. 23 incident. Arlen A. Atkinson, 53, is facing one count of aggravated murder and felonious assault, and, two counts each of murder, aggravated arson and kidnapping.  Atkinson, according to investigators and the Carroll County Prosecutor s Office, retrieved a gas can and set fire to his housemate, Scot Hupp, 58. He died a day later while a patient in the burn unit of Akron Children s Hospital. Both men lived in a three-bedroom brick bungalow at Bellflower and Lilly roads NW in Brown Township. The fire occurred about 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23.

CARROLLTON An argument over being called a racist and disagreement about the Amish apparently led to a Carroll County man dousing a housemate in gasoline, and setting him on fire, according to testimony during a court hearing Tuesday. Arlen A. Atkinson, 53, is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated arson, murder and felonious assault in the Jan. 24 death of Scot E. Hupp, 58. Both men lived in a three-bedroom brick bungalow at Bellflower and Lilly roads NW in Brown Township. The fire occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 23. Rick Stauffer, a Carroll  County sheriff s deputy and investigator assigned to the Carroll County Prosecutor s Office, testified at Tuesday s hearing before Carroll County Municipal Court Judge Gary L. Willen.
