Despite Covid, atmospheric carbon levels hit new peak
Wed, 9 June 2021
An atmospheric research station in the US state of Hawaii recorded its highest concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) since accurate measurements began 63 years ago, a government agency said on June 7, adding that the coronavirus pandemic had barely impacted rising levels of the greenhouse gas.
The Mauna Loa Atmospheric Baseline Observatory’s measurements for last month averaged 419 parts per million (ppm), up from 417 ppm in May last year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego was also involved in the research.

The data measured in May is the monthly average of atmospheric data recorded by NOAA and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at an observatory on Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano.
