Budding young scientists from throughout the region participated in the 36th Annual Stanislaus County Regional Science Olympiad in early March. This year’s event was virtual due to pandemic restrictions as a result of COVID-19. All Northern California Regions (Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Sacramento, Bay Area, Santa Clara, Tulare, and Fresno) banded together to have all online testing take place simultaneously, utilizing the same volunteers for all regions. Each school competed only against teams within their region. More than 300 students from the Stanislaus region junior and senior high schools competed in the day-long event.

The Central Valley has received a $32 million grant for the Migrant Head Start program. Much of this funding will go directly to kids in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties Announcement of the grant came this past week from Rep. Josh Harder, who worked to secure the funding in last year’s appropriations process.
“Every kid, no matter where their parents are from, deserves a great education. This funding will help set a whole generation in the Central Valley up for success,” said Rep. Harder. “We’re facing a years-long process of addressing the learning losses caused by the pandemic. We’re going to need every dollar we can to keep our kids on track, and this is a huge step in the right direction.”

Ceres Unified School District officials say they are looking forward to welcoming all students back to classrooms – as soon as “safely” possible.
“Please be assured that we will do so with the guidance and recommendation of health officials, in collaboration with the Stanislaus County Office of Education, and with health and safety protocols in place,” CUSD Supt. Scott Siegel said.

Ceres Unified School District Supt. Scott Siegel was honored with the “Citizen of the Year Lifetime Achievement” award during a socially distanced format at the Ceres Community Center on Monday evening.
This marks the 52nd year that the Ceres Chamber of Commerce has recognized outstanding members of the community who have made extraordinary contributions to Ceres. For the first time since 1969, the Ceres Chamber of Commerce did not honor a “Citizen of the Year” in a banquet setting because of precautions related to COVID-19.
