NEW YORK, May 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ American Skin Association has announced the awarding of two coveted research grants under the
ASA Milstein Research Scholar Awards program
.
ASA Milstein Research Scholar Award for Melanoma/Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer and
Ester Del Duca, MD of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai received the
ASA Milstein Research Scholar Award in Atopic Dermatitis.
This year of grants includes the
ASA Daneen & Charles Stiefel Investigative Scientist Award in Melanoma Research awarded to
Elena Piskonouva, PhD of Weill Cornell Medicine. The Stiefel Family, longtime supporters of ASA, generously contributed $300,000 to support grants for melanoma research. Washoe County residents 12 years old and older are now eligible to receive Pfizer s COVID-19 vaccine, the Regional Information Center announced Thursday morning.
Appointments for vaccinations at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center can be scheduled at vax4nv.gov/patient/s/. Vaccinations also will be available for those without appointments.
Appointments and walk-in vaccinations for Washoe County residents 12 and older also are available at local Walmart, CVS and Walgreens locations.
COVID hospitalizations hit new low in Washoe
Washoe County hospitals have hit a new all-time low for coronavirus hospitalizations in the COVID-19 era, with just 14 patients reported on Tuesday, according to the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services.
After postponing last year’s Alumni Awards Ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Geisel School of Medicine recognized the 2020 and 2021 honorees in a virtual celebration on May 6. The 11 award recipients represented class years from 1955 to 2006 and careers in research, patient care, policy, leadership, and service. They all expressed deep gratitude for the award, and for the Dartmouth medical school education that launched their rewarding careers.
In his welcoming remarks, Geisel Alumni Council President John Houde MED ’92 said, “These 11 alumni have made a significant impact through their work in medicine, science, research, and health policy; and through their service to others and to the School.”

Only days after the World Health Organization (WHO) deemed the double mutant variant of the SARS-CoV-2 found in India a global concern, the international body has said that the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines show limited effectiveness against the variant.
The WHO said in a note that preliminary laboratory studies have found that the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna showed reduced effectiveness against the tricky variant discovered in India.
