Connecticut has a historic opportunity to build public safety and foster prosperity for many who have been denied equitable access to it. SB 1019 is a pending bill, known as the Clean Slate bill, which, if passed, will help hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residents by clearing their criminal records.
We all care about public safety. We have been conditioned to expect the worst from those who have committed crimes in the past, but this worry about repeated criminal conduct tempts us to paint others with too broad a brush. Not all past crimes are good indicators of future risk, and a superficial fear response can stop us from looking more deeply for the best ways to improve public safety for all.

HARTFORD, Conn. The attorney for Michelle Troconis has asked the court to provide the testimony given by a doctor in the divorce hearing between Jennifer Dulos and Fotis Dulos in May 2019 prior to Jennifer s disappearance.
Troconis was charged in January 2020 with conspiracy to commit murder and charges of tampering with the evidence.
This week, her attorney, Jon L. Schoenhorn, asked the court to provide the transcripts of the testimony of Dr. Stephen Herman in May 2019 in the Dulos v Dulos divorce case. He said as far as he knows the testimony was not sealed by the court.
A man has reportedly confessed to killing his 50-year-old Jamaican-born mother at her home in Stamford, Connecticut in the United States.
Winston Weathers, a 25-year-old resident of Stamford, was arrested in New York on Tuesday after Denise McLaughlin was found dead with stab wounds inside her apartment on Friday, April 2.
Weathers appeared in the Stamford Superior Court a day later on murder charges, and was held on suicide watch on $2.5 million bond, according to the Stamford Advocate news website.
He is to return to court on May 24.
During the court arraignment, Senior Assistant State Attorney, Maureen Ornousky, said Weathers had checked himself into a New York psychiatric facility, where he was later found by police.

STAMFORD A former South End bouncer was sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a 2015 home burglary that left a Glenbrook man with two fractured eye sockets.
Judge Gary White handed Joseph Donofrio, 36, a 10-year suspended sentence that will see him serving four years in prison, in addition to three years of probation following his release.
Donofrio was taken away from Stamford Superior Court in handcuffs as his mother, who was watching with other family members in the galley, burst into tears Tuesday afternoon.
