Double homicide: Taranaki man, 21, admits murdering his father and brother

SIMON O CONNOR/STUFF A man has pleaded guilty to murdering two people in South Taranaki in the early hours of January 18. He previously entered deemed not guilty pleas and a forensic psychiatrist was employed to assess his mental health. Justice Mallon said a further health assessment report had been ordered under the Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act. On the basis of those reports, she was satisfied Frost was fit to stand trial. Each murder charge was then read to Frost who quietly but clearly admitted guilt to both. The summary of facts and victim impact statements would be filed to the court in due course, it was heard.

At a brief appearance at the High Court in New Plymouth this morning Frost entered deemed not guilty pleas through his counsel Paul Keegan. He is accused of killing 15-year-old Regan Frost-Lawn and 55-year-old Stephen John Frost on 18 January at a residential address in Hawera. Keegan did not seek to extend Nathan Frost s name suppression. Justice Jillian Mallone remanded him to reappear in April for a case review. A tentative trial date has been set down for November.
