THERE will be Labour representation in Northumberland County Council matters relating to Tynedale for the first time in four years. The party reclaimed its seat in Prudhoe North after an absence of one term, while also claiming the Bywell ward from the Tories. Ken Stow successfully removed Labour from Prudhoe North four years ago, but his successor Tracy Gilmore, the current town mayor, was unable to keep the seat blue. She went head to head with Labour s Angie Scott, who received just 67 more votes than Mrs Gilmore to return the seat to Labour. Coun. Scott received 862 votes to Mrs Gilmore s 795.

Polls for both county and parish council seats will go ahead as scheduled in May, despite earlier concerns in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Holly Waddell is the Labour Party candidate for the Bywell ward. Her bid comes after Coun. Karen Quinn (Con), who currently holds the seat, said she would not be standing for re-election. In a statement, the Conservative Party said: “With the elections scheduled for May 6, Northumberland Conservatives are in the process of finalising the last few places they have yet to fill for candidates. The party has been overwhelmed by the number of applicants and nearly all sitting councillors have indicated that they wish to continue.
