FOUR Shetland musicians have agreed to each donate a tune to a fundraising campaign based around the restoration of a 1937 fishing boat built in Fife. Margaret Robertson, Jenna Reid, Steven Spence and Peter Wood will all take part. The campaign centres around restoring the Manx.
A CRACKDOWN on speeding through a rural village has been hailed as a success. Concerns were previously raised that the 20 miles per hour (mph) speed limit in Athelstaneford was “virtually ignored” by motorists. Community police officers visited the village last month to try to address the problem following a request from Haddington and District Community Council, which also covers the village. Officers carried out a speed check, as well as speaking to residents and schoolchildren about the issue. Malcolm Vickers, who represents the village on the community council, described the initiative as “very successful”. He said: “I think the police were absolutely terrific.

With all fire festivals cancelled all over Shetland due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Yell Up Helly Aa committee is inviting everybody join in virtually.

On Friday night a selection of squad performances from the past decade will be available to watch on the Cullivoe Up Helly Aa’s Facebook or YouTube pages starting from 8pm with a video montage of previous processions and galley burnings.
