TN guidance counselor charged for changing student records

WBBJ TV May 14, 2021 DOVER, Tenn. (AP) The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says a former high school guidance counselor has been charged for improperly altering students’ transcripts. Gayla Grise was indicted Monday on two counts of falsifying educational academic records at Stewart County High School. The agency says an investigation launched in September found that she made multiple changes to a records database that she didn’t have the authority to make. News outlets reported that Grise was fired in October. The investigation bureau says the 51-year-old was booked Wednesday at the Stewart County Jail on a $500 bond. But there was more to come. Students were unaware that their grades were being swapped out The following day, school authorities also learned of a third incident and revoked Grise’s access to the system and placed her on unpaid administrative leave. It is believed that the students weren’t aware of the scheme. ‘From what my investigation shows … the students didn’t know this was going on,’ Craig said at a board meeting.  Grise, who worked for the district for more than a decade, was fired in October. It remained unclear whether the former school counselor had graded student’s marks up or down and how she came to choose the students whose grades she tampered with.

Gayla Grise was indicted Monday on two counts of falsifying educational academic records when she worked at Stewart County High School, the investigation bureau said in a statement Thursday. An investigation launched in September found that the 51-year-old made “multiple changes within the school’s internal academic records database” that she didn’t have the authority to make, according to the agency. Clarksville’s The Leaf-Chronicle reported in October that Grise was fired after director of schools Mike Craig recommended her dismissal to the board of education.
