ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) The trajectory of Steve Goff’s career from homeless dishwasher to lauded executive chef is as unlikely as it is a great story.
Once a train-hopping gutter punk, Goff stopped along the way in Asheville in 2003 to protest for gay rights.
A conspicuous target with his pink, leopard spotted mohawk, Goff was apprehended at the protest and eventually pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Though he kept trying to leave Asheville after that inauspicious start, he never could seem to escape.
Meanwhile, he slept in the woods off Charlotte Street, across from a building that would eventually change his life.

The last few remaining healthy D.C. United players left face a massive challenge today, as they take on the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew in what will be the Black-and-Red’s last visit to Historic Crew Stadium. United, who are missing nearly half of their roster at the moment due to injuries, will have to dig very deep to repeat last fall’s stunning victory over the Crew.
Key player: Frederic Brillant
One of the last few United players who has not had some kind of injury this year, Brillant is going to have to provide error-free leadership on top of being severely tested in terms of his own defending. The Crew may be goalless in MLS this season, but if you look at their projected lineup, that’s not going to last forever. They’ve got some serious attacking talent, including a potential Best 11 playmaker and a USMNT striker; they’re not champions by accident.
