SNF Cancels Its Grant to the Hellenic Sailing Federation

The National Herald The National Herald      ΑΤΗΕΝS On February 17, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) informed the Hellenic Sailing Federation (EIO) by letter of its decision to cancel the remaining balance of its grant to the Federation, effective immediately. SNF’s decision is in no way intended to penalize the grant’s direct beneficiaries, the people with disabilities who take part in the sailing program. Recognizing the importance of the program and with a sense of responsibility toward its beneficiaries, SNF intends to act transparently to reallocate the remaining balance of the grant directly to local sailing clubs throughout Greece to allow the program to continue without interruption. The Foundation will immediately explore alternative ways of implementing the program, with the ultimate goal of best serving participants.

Desert Botanical Garden New Outdoor Art Several new outdoor artworks are being installed around metro Phoenix this month. Tempe Public Art commissioned Roy Wasson Valle to create a piece on a clear wall at the Tempe Center for the Arts sculpture garden, which will be visible from The Gallery at TCA and the path running along Tempe Town Lake. An installation titled Water will be on view at Desert Botanical Garden starting on February 23. Created by Natasha Lisitsa and Daniel Schultz of Waterlily Pond Studio, the piece spans 100 feet and was made with materials that include 8,000 colored wooden dowels and 2,000 red flowering blooms.

U S Army officers explore role of the military

FILE PHOTO The Hopkins Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, which was established in 1916, is the oldest program of its kind in the nation. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute hosted a student forum titled “Closing the Civilian-Military Divide” on Feb. 10. During the event, panelists discussed misconceptions about the U.S. military with Hopkins students. The panel featured Grace Park, a visiting Agora research fellow and former U.S. Army captain, and Lieutenant Colonel Angelique Pifer, an Army strategic intelligence officer and current professor of Military Science for the Hopkins Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Park highlighted that the Agora decided to host the event after observing the public’s misconceptions about the military, namely due to its role in domestic civil unrest.

Hellenic Film Society USA - Greek Films Streaming Worldwide Until March 6

The Tree and the Swing The Hellenic Film Society USA (HFS) will stream two Greek films worldwide, as part of its Always on Sunday on Demand monthly film series. The romantic comedy ‘Committed’ and the drama ‘The Tree and the Swing ‘, will be presented through March 6. Both films have English subtitles. ‘Committed’ , written and directed by Stelana Kliris and filmed on location in Cyprus, is a bittersweet romantic comedy about a runaway bride who meets a young man on the road. He, too, has commitment issues. Filmed on location in Greece, ‘The Tree and the Swing ‘, written and directed by Maria Douza, tells the story of a cardiology professor who returns to Greece to reconcile with her estranged father. Winner of eight Cyprus International Film Festival Awards, including Best Feature Film.
