It’s starting to dry up outside with the warmer weather and that means it is once again wildfire season in Strathcona County.
Fire marshall Rod Kuhn said it has been a busy start to the season already with 14 brush or outdoor fires reported since April 1.

“We are seeing it is trending up a little bit,” explained Kuhn. “In the springtime with the dry grass, we do more instances of grass fires until the rain hits. We haven’t had anything too severe but we have had a couple that has required a bit more resources for them but all have been handled by our firefighting crews.”
EDMONTON An evening grass fire near the Strathcona Science Park is under investigation after it threatened a set of railway tracks. Strathcona County Fire Department confirmed to CTV News Edmonton that firefighters responded at 7:50 p.m Saturday. The fire was originally on the outskirts of the Strathcona Science Park but once firefighters arrived on scene, the fire was closer to the railway tracks near Gibsons Energy. Two brush trucks, two tankers, a fire engine, and a command car responded. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control before 9 p.m. Strathcona fire says a 100 metre by 30 metre area burned.
