The violence came in response to loyalist anger about the terms of the Northern Ireland protocol coupled with last week s news that the PPS would not be pursuing Sinn Fein members over alleged breaches of coronavirus regulations at last summer s funeral of Republican Bobby Storey.
Speaking of the unrest in Derry, Derry and Strabane District Commander of the PSNI, Darrin Jones, condemned what he said were “disgraceful scenes during which cars were set on fire and property damaged”.
He added: “This is reckless and criminal behaviour, and it has to stop. It is absolutely appalling and achieved nothing except harm to our community.
