Powered by a record-breaking performance, Adele’s “25” lands atop the Billboard 200.
Per Nielsen Music, the smash hit album generated 3.48 million total consumption units in the United States. 3,377,885 came from pure album sales (obviously enough for #1 on Top Album Sales), 96,000 came from Track Equivalent Albums (track sales/10) and 8,000 came from Streaming Equivalent Albums (track streams/1500; only “Hello” is on eligible streaming services).
Both the 3.48 million and 3.38 million figures represent new Soundscan era records. NSYNC’s 2000 album “No Strings Attached,” which previously held the record for opening week US sales, sold 2.416 million pure copies during its inaugural week (at the time, the Billboard 200 only measured pure sales).

Update: When reporting Hits Daily Double’s sales data, we noted the possibility that Billboard’s final data would differ.
It did. And that difference in reported sales was enough to produce a different leader on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart.
Whereas Hits Daily Double said Radiohead’s “A Moon Shaped Pool” won the May 6-12 US album sales race, Billboard declares Drake’s “Views” the winner. The music publication says “Views” sold 175,000 weekly copies, while “Pool” shifted 173,000.
Drake’s “Views” also tops the Billboard 200 consumption chart, which ranks albums based on the sum of pure sales, Track Equivalent Albums (track sales/10) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (track streams/1500).
Update: James Taylor had been immensely successful throughout his lengthy career. Prior to this week, he had not, however, reached the top of the album

Update: An opening week total of 109,000 pure US sales earns Janet Jackson’s “Unbreakable” the #1 spot on this week’s Billboard Top Album Sales chart.
Its weekly sales victory was of the dominant variety; no other album sold more than 38,000 copies during the October 2-8 tracking week.
“Unbreakable” also tops the consumption-oriented Billboard 200. With Track Equivalent Albums (10 single sales = 1 album equivalent unit) and Streaming Equivalent Albums (1500 single streams = 1 album equivalent unit) added to its sales total, “Unbreakable” posted a first-week consumption total of 116,000 units.
It becomes her seventh album to claim #1 on the BB200
