Despite hopes from Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie to take the seat, Ms Todd beat their candidate Molly Nolan with 15,889 votes to 13,298. The result significantly ate into the SNP majority of 3,193 at the last election, but did not cause the upset the Liberal Democrats had hoped for. Maree Todd paid tribute to her family in her victory speech, saying they were “everything”

Sign Up Half of the rising stars of Scottish politics who participated in our Generation Next project have been confirmed as Holyrood election candidates. The celebrated series, which was published last October, featured in-depth interviews with 35 budding politicians, who were all aged 35 or under and from north of the central belt. Each interviewee had been tipped by senior colleagues for a bright future in politics, and now 18 of them have emerged as candidates for the Scottish Parliament vote on May 6.

Sign Up The delay in the roll-out of superfast broadband has been greeted with anger in the north. The northern part of the Scottish Government’s superfast broadband rollout will not be finished until 2026, four years later than originally planned. Paul Wheelhouse, the minister for connectivity, said the R100 scheme will take longer than the Government had initially hoped but will ultimately deliver faster speeds for customers. R100 was meant to deliver superfast broadband to 100% of premises by the end of 2021.
