The drive that made S. Prestley Blake and the Friendly’s chain he founded with his brother, Curtis, in the depths of the Great Depression a success didn’t waiver, even in Blake’s final weeks.
“Pres was always in command, right up until the last minute,” his wife of 38 years, Helen, said Friday. “The most dreaded words every morning were ‘I have an idea’.”

In 1976, Paul Piquette was a graphic arts student at Springfield Technical Community College, paying for his education through a job at the Springfield-based Smith & Wesson firearms manufacturing company while doing portraits on the side.
While the job was seemingly unrelated to his artistic interests, it became a jumping point for his nearly five-decades-long career as a master hand engraver.
Piquette has spent the last 20 years in this craft on the staff of MurDuff’s Jewelry Store in Florence.
When Piquette took the job at Smith & Wesson, he did not realize the company had an engraving division. But when another employee offered him an apprenticeship, he saw it as a natural fit for his artistic interests.

SPRINGFIELD Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) will restore five programs that were discontinued last year in response to projected budget shortfalls brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The STCC board of trustees voted Monday to support biomedical engineering technology, biotechnology, civil engineering technology, dental assisting, and landscape design and management.
STCC President John Cook said the college will work to reinstate programs after open, transparent, and public conversations with college stakeholders about needs and resources.
“The vote by trustees was important and offers helpful direction for the college moving forward,” Cook said. “We know our unique programs make STCC special, and we will always strive to meet industry and workforce needs. Our faculty and staff remain passionate about the college’s mission. The depth of discussion and consideration in 2020 ensures we are a stronger institution in 2021.”
