Jan. 28 SPRINGFIELD One of the state’s top public defenders is faulting Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and Police Commissioner Cheryl C. Clapprood for using the “bully pulpit to stoke fear.”
Randy Gioia, deputy chief counsel for the Committee for Public Counsel Services, reacted to comments made Wednesday by Sarno and Clapprood criticizing a Springfield District Court judge’s decision to release a firearms suspect from custody on the condition that he wear a GPS monitoring device.
Fall River, Somerset pharmacies among new COVID-19 vaccine access points

BOSTON More than a dozen Massachusetts pharmacies including ones in Fall River and Somerset will administer thousands of COVID-19 vaccines through a new federal partnership, a mass vaccination site will open at Fenway Park next month, and UMass Amherst will expand its immunization efforts in an escalation of the state s rollout plans.
Gov. Charlie Baker s office on Tuesday announced the significant uptick in vaccine capacity on four fronts, collectively adding thousands of doses per week to the state s capacity.
CVS and Walgreens pharmacies will share 10,000 vaccine doses per week to administer as part of the COVID-19 Centers for Disease Control Pharmacy Partnership, Baker s office said, making Massachusetts one of the first states in the new program.

SPRINGFIELD A city man arrested in October on drug trafficking charges after a narcotics raid that uncovered 30,000 bags of heroin and some illegal firearms was arrested again on Tuesday and charged with trafficking heroin.
Carlos Lopez, 48, was arrested at a convenience store on Longmeadow Street in East Longmeadow as part of an investigation by Springfield police narcotics detectives, and members of the Springfield task force of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the West Chester, New York, chapter of the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force.
