Sixth Street from Wellesley Avenue to Broad Place will be closed from Friday through Monday.
The closure is for the construction of replacement railroad bridges related to the Springfield Rail Improvements Project.
Traffic control devices, signage and dynamic message boards will be in place to guide motorists around the closure. Travelers are advised to consider alternate routes or allow additional time to travel around the closure.
Through traffic will not be allowed, but access will be maintained to all properties within the closure.
Some significant traffic disruptions are coming for Springfield motorists, including the 14-month closures of both Madison and Jefferson streets at the same time as part of the Springfield Rail Improvements Project.
Springfield council members were updated on the $356 million project during last week s committee of the whole meeting by James Moll, a vice president and project manager from Hanson Engineers. Moll contended that the team has seen no evidence that construction equipment has caused structural damage to homes in the area over the contention of Ward 6 Ald. Kristin DiCenso.
The rail improvements project aims to alleviate rail congestion in downtown Springfield by consolidating train traffic from Third Street to 10th Street and through building a series of overpasses and underpasses along the corridor.
The Springfield City Council passed an ordinance authorizing a development agreement with the Springfield Park District for improvements in parks in the Enos Park and Madison Park tax-increment financing districts during a special meeting Tuesday.
The final adoption came with an amendment: The park district won t get money from the city until it makes improvements on the parks, and the money doled out will be on a project-by-project basis.
The amendment further limited the park district to spending any leftover money on two parks Comer Cox and Chamberlain both in the Far East TIF District, which is contiguous to both the Enos Park and Madison Park Place TIF districts.
